JASEN WILLIAMS HEADED TO CONFERENCE USA! |
 |
 |
By: Jim Hicks (RCS Sports)
In the wake of various schools around the state landing pledges
from top prospects, the Rice Owls have wasted no time getting right into the mix
of things. On Sunday afternoon,
Jasen Williams 6’1 cg (Nimitz
HS) decided he’ll to remain home and attend Rice. The official decision came
within hours after Williams along with his parents took an official visit to the
campus. However, Williams had made up his mind long before that. “Coach Wilson
talked with me about the system and how I fit in, and it made real sense like he
knows what he’s talking about,” stated Williams. After the second time playing
with the players, and talking to (recent Westfield HS grad) Chris Hagan helped
too. He told me, ‘I won't allow you to slack up’ and I really like that. I
won't allow him to slack up either. Together we can be one of the best
backcourts in the conference.”
Williams is truly one of the most improved players in Texas. While playing
the summer circuit with “Houston Pride” travel team (coached by his dad,
Darrell) comprised primarily of Nimitz HS teammates, Williams routinely led the
team to impressive wins and made things happen on both ends of the court. He
had one of those summers that could be defined by artist Mike Jones’ hit song
“Back Then”. Within a four month span, he went from basically unknown around
the entire state and barely a top 50 listing in the city to recently earning a
#49 statewide listing from Texashoops.com and #15 among the entire Greater
Houston area by RCS Sports. Remarkable when you consider the fact that
Williams didn't even start last season on the varsity, and averaged less than
10ppg yet was found himself entertaining offers from Tulane, Oral Roberts, SFA,
Southeast Louisiana, and of course Rice. While pausing to soak in the moment,
he sighed, “Yeah, that is quite an accomplishment”.
Williams plans to major in Sports Management, and he appears to have a
pretty good set of intentions to support that. “I’ll try to become a GM to help
the (Houston) Rockets out”. Some of their recent player personnel decisions
didn't gain Williams’ approval. “They (Rockets) keep getting the wrong support
players. The team needs more athleticism and energy, besides McGrady. I really
don't agree with the move to trade the Rudy Gay pick for (Shane) Battier.”
Despite it all, Williams admits he’s an avid Rockets’ fan who looks forward to
the upcoming season. Meanwhile, many Rice fans will be looking forward to the
lanky combo guard’s senior season at Nimitz High.
